Holistic therapy for men in Boulder
Feeling like you constantly need to appear competent in order to be loved?
I'm Lori Beth Goldman, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Boulder, Colorado, and I work with men one to one. The work is holistic: we pay attention to your body and feelings as well as your thinking. We meet in person at my office on Iris Avenue or online, starting with a free 15-minute call.
What do men bring to therapy with me?
Men carry a lot of conflicting expectations: to be strong, stable providers, and at the same time soft and attuned to the people around them, often while managing complex feelings on their own.
As adult men, the tendency to ignore feelings and hide internal longings, or quickly come up with a solution in order to appear competent, can lead to depression, anxiety, isolation and rage, and significantly affect a man's self-esteem and effectiveness in his life and relationships.

Is it better for a man to see a male therapist?
It goes both ways. Some men want to work with a man, and that preference deserves to be taken seriously. If that is what you want and need, I will support you in finding one. Others want a woman, sometimes because of hard experiences with their father or other men, sometimes because they want a woman's perspective on their relationships.
What matters most is whether you can be honest in the room, and only a conversation tells you that. The free 15-minute call is a low-stakes way to find out whether you can be straight with me. I will be straight with you about whether I am the right fit.
What type of therapy suits men?
There is no single type that suits every man. Some want practical tools, some want to understand where their patterns came from, and many want both. For some men, it feels really good to be in touch with their sensitive side, whereas for others it feels like forcing themselves to be something they are not.
How do I work with men?
I am direct and candid, and I bring a natural curiosity to the work. My approach combines relational, depth-oriented and somatic therapy. We talk, and we notice what your body does while you talk. A feeling often shows up there, in the jaw or the breath, before you have words for it.
The aim is to understand who you are apart from the expectations you grew up with, on your own terms. There's another way to live and move through the world.
Questions people ask
I have never been to therapy. What happens first?
A free 15-minute call. You tell me what is happening and I listen and reflect. I explain how I work, and I am clear about whether I think I can help.
Do you see couples?
No. I work with individuals.
Can we meet online?
Yes, if you are located in Colorado or California at the time of the session. See online therapy in Colorado and California.
What does it cost?
I am private pay and not on insurance panels. I can give you a superbill, which you can send to a PPO plan for possible out-of-network reimbursement. We talk about fees on the free consultation call, and you can ask me for a Good Faith Estimate of expected charges.
