Online therapy in Colorado and California

Therapy by video with a therapist licensed in both states. In person is also available at my Boulder office.

I'm Lori Beth Goldman, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Colorado (MFT.0002249) and California (LMFT 51126). I offer online therapy by video to people located in Colorado or California at the time of the session, and I see people in person at my office in Boulder.

Who can work with me online?

People located in Colorado or California at the time of the session. The rule follows where you are, not where you live, so if you travel outside Colorado and California, we pause or reschedule until you are back.

California requires me to confirm where you are at the start of every session, so I ask everyone.

Can I do teletherapy across state lines?

Only where the therapist is licensed for the place you are. Colorado and California both decide by the client's physical location at the time of the session. I hold active licenses in both states, so I can see you while you are in either one. I cannot see you while you are in any other state, even for a single session.

What are the rules for telehealth in California?

A therapist needs a current California license to see anyone physically located in California, including by video. Before we start, I explain the risks and limits of telehealth and ask for your consent, give you my license number and type, and note the emergency resources near your location. Each session starts by confirming your location.

How is a private practice different from a therapy app?

Therapy apps match you with a therapist through the platform. In a private practice, you talk with the therapist first and decide together whether to work together, and then it is the same person every session. I work in depth over time, and many of my clients stay for years.

What can we work on online?

Craniosacral work is hands-on, so it is not offered online.

What do I need for an online session?

A private room where you will not be overheard, a steady internet connection, and a device with a camera.

Online therapy is not for emergencies. If you are in crisis, call or text 988, or call 911.

How much does online therapy cost?

I am private pay and not on insurance panels. I can give you a superbill, which you can send to a PPO plan for possible out-of-network reimbursement. We talk about fees on the free consultation call, and you can ask me for a Good Faith Estimate of expected charges.
